September - Hispanic Heritage Month Activities

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage & Achievement

National Hispanic Heritage Month highlights the cultures, heritage, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.  During the month of September, ELC students learn about the history, heritage, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans through varying activities.

Please view the current and previous school years' Hispanic Heritage Activities.

2024

Hispanic Heritage month kicked off with us reading, Chicks and Salsa, by Aaron Reynolds.  Students then created their own ponchos based on the main character's fiesta attire.

2023

The book of the month, The Piñata the Farm Maiden Hung by Samantha R. Vamos, describes how a piñata is made using clay, paper and paste.  Through the piñata making process, readers learn words in Spanish. Students then created their own piñatas.

2022

The book of the month, Say Hola to Spanish by Susan Middleton Elya.  The book teaches students simple words in Spanish and the illustrations provide insight into various cultural nuances of Spanish Heritage.  Students then created their own sombreros and shared their designs with their classmates.

2021

The book of the month that provided the foundation for us to celebrate and learn about Hispanic Heritage Month, was How Do You Say? by Angela Dominguez.  Students learned English to Spanish phrases and words.  To further the understanding of Hispanic culture, students created maracas using plastic bottles, construction paper, and dry beans or rice.  We ended each class's Media Center rotation with a Fiesta, shaking their personalized maracas! See pictures and videos below.
